The Provincial Governmnent of Bohol (PGBh) thru Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR Provincial Office), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) thru the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENRO) observed three events in one celebration. These were World Food Day, Fish Conservation, and Consumers’ Month on
October 17, 2011 at JJ's Annex, New Calceta St, Tagbilaran City.
Fishery related topics were discussed during the said event, in connection with the Fish Conservation celebration. This included reviews of Fisheries Order of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 196 – Implementing Guidelines in the Organization of Municipal Fisheries Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC) and or City FARMC. Officers of these councils were presented in the event as they also conducted election of their Federated Officers. Students, teachers, and employees of the member agencies of the Bohol Coastal Resource Management Task Force (BCRMTF) graced in the celebration and have gathered facts about the significance of the three events.
Forester Nestor Canda, OIC of DENR-PENRO Bohol, and Chairman of BCRMTF, challenged the participants and the partner agencies on the need for conservation especially now that the province has become the center for eco-tourism.
Mr. Larry M. Pamugas, OIC of OPA reminded the attendees about the PGBh Development program HEAT Bohol LIFE HELPS strategies and emphasized on the significance of simple yet harmonized efforts for nature conservation.
Promotion of organic food products is the main campaign for this year’s World Food Day (WFD) Celebration. The celebration was attended by the WFD cooperating agencies like DENR, Department of Health (DOH), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as different speakers talked about WFD Celebration, Fish Conservation Week, and Consumers’ Month.
For WFD celebration,Vice Governor Concepcion O. Lim also sent his message to the attendees through her representative Hon. Abeleon Damalerio, SP Committee on Agriculture. The vice governor emphasized in her message the importance of food sufficiency strategies as the three events celebrated are all related to Food Sufficiency.
Engr. Eugine Cahiles, Project Manager of DA-Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center (DA-BAPC) read the message of DA-Regional Field Unit 7 (DA-RFU-7) Director Leo P. Cañeda. In his message, Dir. Cañeda was glad that the province is also celebrating WFD. He also informed the attendees about the different DA programs for food sufficiency, sustainable agricultural development, national resource management, and rural development. Engr. Cahiles also added to the director’s message depicting about the previous programs of BAPC like the Fertilizer, Irrigation and Agricultural Infrastructure, Educational support, Loans for farmers, Dryer programs, and Seed subsidy program (FIELDS)
For Consumers’ Welfare Month celebration, Dir. Asteria M. Cabarte, Regional Director of Department of Trade and Industry Region 7 talked about health as important factor for development. With this, her department enforces policies that insure safe food, maintain consumer rights reservation and awareness on trade malpractices in the locality.
Gov. Edgar M. Chatto also said his message after he inducted the Federated MFARMC Officers during their oath-taking rites. The governor said observing the three events are essential because these are international issues. He reminded the attendees that by working all together, we can attain sufficiency in agriculture and economic growth. Gov. Chatto reminded the attendees about having Bahay Kubo FAITH HOPE CHARITY program as one of the simplest means of attaining safe, healthy, and sufficient food. He also congratulated everyone for their contribution of hardwork and encouraged them as well to do better especially for the welfare of the generations to come.
