In the aim of providing more solutions for the problem of the needs of Boholanos especially for food and as one of the means to attain food sufficiency in the province, the Provincial Government thru the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI-7), Bohol-Agricultural Promotion Center (B-APC) in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd Provincial and City Offices), spearheaded once again one of the government programs that gives attention to the children and agriculture. This is called the “Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP).
This program is implemented under the leadership of the honorable Governor Edgar M. Chatto. This follows the concept of the same program of the national government called the “Food-for-school” and “Gulayan sa Paaralan” of the Department of Agriculture (DA) which also relates to the developmental framework of the provincial government, the which is the HEAT
Bohol LIFE HELPS wherein agriculture and education is among the prioritized sectors.
The GPP of the provincial government targets to widen the knowledge of the public about the importance of having a good health. To hit this target, it is essential to have gardens in school surroundings so that there would always be available source of nutritious food for our children and so that they will also learn and experience agri-business despite of their young age. The program also aimed to increase available source of vegetables that are good source of vitamins and minerals that promotes good health and to instill into children the importance of perseverance and helping themselves help others.
The provincial government has already organized a Provincial Technical Working Group (PTWG) which is composed of OPA, ATI-7, DA-APC, and DepED that will manage this program. The group is responsible in the promotion of sustainable agriculture like the Bahay Kubo-Food Always In the Home (FAITH) and Herbal Organic Plant Enhancement (HOPE) which is also one program of the Chatto administration; distribute vegetable seeds including herbal plants to elementary and secondary schools province wide; manage the search for “Modelong Gulayan sa Paaralan”; monitors the implementation of the program and gives prizes to the winners of the search, requires teachers and coordinators of the program to undergo proper training on organic agriculture given by the OPA and DA-RFU-7.
The GPP PTWG is currently doing essential matters in the program implementation such as the on-going distribution of assorted vegetable seeds to public schools province wide. Initially the Provincial Government funded some P2.5 M out of its 20% Development Fund for the procurement of vegetable seeds including conduct of trainings and operational cost.
